I cannot wait to jumpstart a new year of school. This past winter I enjoyed about two months in South America training and competing in the Junior World Championships. I trained in Santiago, Chile for a month with Cory Pickos and the Miranda Family. I then flew to Lima, Peru and skied for about a week before the actual tournament began. This tournament by far has been the highlight of my skiing career. I came away with 3 gold medals (Slalom, Overall, Team Overall), one silver medal (Tricks), and one bronze medal (Jump). The Cugllievan Family was gracious enough to hold the event, and they did a spectacular job. Peru was by far the biggest thrill I have ever experienced, and I cannot wait to return there one day. This summer is a very packed and exciting summer for me. Though I have gotten off to a bit of a late start a caused to the atrocious weather in Tennessee, I plan to jump start the year with a record trick tournament at the Cory Pickos World Ski Center. Shortly after, I will make my way up to Calaway Garden to compete in my 5th Jr. Masters. Regretfully I will have to miss the Junior US Open because I will be graduating from high school. Cory Pickos is hosting two tournaments the following weekends at his lake- Superstars and US Team Trails. I hope to make our U21 Team that will be competing for the U21 World Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. I am most excited about representing the United States in Taiwan this summer. There, along with Storm Selser, I will be competing in the World Games. This is an opportunity I am most thrilled to partake in. I will be there for a week in late July. There is more news to come... Thank you to one of my sponsors Performance Ski and Surf in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Porter has helped me out a great deal with my skiing program, and I wouldn't be where I am today without his outstanding equipment to get me deep into 38 off, over 7000 points, and launching 150 feet jumps!
Personal: I train at No Wake Lake in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, which is near Chattanooga, and at the Cory Pickos World Ski Center in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. I have been fortunate to live and train at the Cory Pickos World Ski Center for the past seven summers. Cory and Rose Pickos, along with other instructors such as Javier Julio and Regina Jaquess, have taught me many useful tips in skiing. I always look forward to spending my summers with these people. I returned to the US in mid-January this past year from the Junior World Championships held near Lima, Peru. This tournament was by far the greatest and most exciting tournament I have competed in. Lauren Morgan, John Lex Kennerly, Zack Worden, Leif Abel, and Adam Pickos all skied for the USA. For several of them, it was their first world competition, but for me it was my 4th. After much practice, I brought home 3 gold medals-slalom, Overall, Team Overall, 1 Silver medal-tricks, and a bronze medal-jumping. I also tied the Junior World Slalom Record with 3 @38 off. Peru was one of the greatest experiences of my life- one that I will never forget. In 2007/2008, I was in Santiago Chile for about three weeks skiing in the U21 World Championships. When I went to Santiago, I fell in love with the city. I have returned there two other times since then. This tournament kicked off the skiing season being in January. The weather was a bit too chilly to ski in the US, so I trained for about two weeks in Santiago before the tournament. When my parents arrived, we visited Vina del Mar and Cachagua- two very nice beaches. The U21 Worlds was an event that will never escape my mind. Being one of the youngest teams there (all under 18 years old), we were fairly inexperience, but still managed to bring home a silver medal. In 2006 I took a trip to Moissac, France to compete for Team USA in the Jr. World Championships. Team USA brought back a silver medal from France. This past September, Team USA ventured to Cuernavaca, Mexico to compete in the Pan American Championships where we brought home the gold medal. I ended the tournament with 5 gold medals: 4 Individual golds and 1 Team gold. I also set a new Pan American Jump record for Junior Girls with a jump of 42.8 meter, or 140 feet. I had a lot of fun and going to these different countries is a real eye-opener. Laurel Hensley My older sister Laurel is an Auburn Graduate. She now has a degree in architecture.
